Mystic 40 Catamaran Update: Cosker Making Power Plans

With the first 40-foot Mystic Powerboats catamaran in the paint booth and slated for a 2015 Miami International Boat Show introduction in February, John Cosker, the founder and owner of the DeLand, Fla.-based company has begun finalizing what he will offer as power options for the pleasure and poker run versions of the new M4000 cat. A “demo boat,” the first 40-footer that will debut in Miami will be powered by twin Mercury Racing 700SCi engines.

The second M4000, the hull and deck for which have been completed, will be built with a pair of Mercury Racing 1100 engines. Cosker said that while he has not yet made his final decision, he might not offer the catamaran with bigger power.

“Based on our calculations on the weight of the boat, it’s going to be plenty fast with 1100s,” he said. “I’m not sure how much faster anyone needs to go in a 40-foot, open-cockpit catamaran. It’s a full carbon boat that’s very light and will be very fast.”

Cosker declined to offer a specific estimated top-speed number.

Like its upcoming Mystic center console cousin dubbed the M3900 (read the latest story) that will debut at the 2015 Miami show as well, the first pair of M4000 cats was built—and all M4000 models will to continue to be built—with vacuum infusion lamination technology. The process enables the builder to control the amount and placement of epoxy, carbon fiber and Kevlar used during lay-up, which means that each hull and deck will have almost exactly the same finished weight.

For pleasure and poker run versions of the M4000, power options may top out at twin Mercury Racing 1100s.

“Vacuum infusion gives Mystic the ability to be incredibly consistent,” said Scott Sjogren, the owner of Pier 57 Marine, Mystic’s global dealer in Gurnee, Ill. “There will not be radical weight differences in the weight of the boats from one build to the next, and that’s important.”
