Mystic 40 Catamaran Update: Infusion Lay-Up Underway
Lamination of Mystic Powerboats’ first 40-foot catamaran—one of three ordered so far since the DeLand, Fla., custom high-performance builder announced late last year that it would build a 40-footer—is scheduled to begin this week. Mystic is using an epoxy vacuum infusion process—a first for the company—to create the new model. To date, the builder has three orders for the 40-footers.
Mystic has started laying down carbon fiber in the hull mold for its first 40-footer.
“We have our fingers crossed that by end of next week we will have our first carbon fiber and epoxy infused hull,” said John Cosker, the owner and founder of Mystic. “Once we built the mold, we put a glass master on top of it to create a plug, which we are fiberglassing now.”
Cosker said he expects the first 40-footer to be finished by September or October. The first three cats will be equipped with Mercury Racing engines—the first with twin 700 engines, the second with 1,100s and the third with 1,350s.
“We’ve built all the internal structures and they’re ready to install,” said Cosker. “We’ve actually built some new carbon fiber seats for the boat.”
The epoxy-and-carbon-fiber internal structural elements for Mystic’s 40-footer also are being created using the vacuum infusion process.
As noted in the first speedonthewaterr.com story on the 40-footer, the catamaran will be available in an open-cockpit version called the C4000S, a high-performance canopied pleasure version called the C4000RS and a pure offshore racing version dubbed the C4000R.
