Mystic Expanding In-House Painting Services

Aside from painting solid colors, Mystic Powerboats in DeLand, Fla., has typically used outside paint shops to handle graphics for its 50-foot CS5000 catamarans. While company principal John Cosker said that Mystic will still use any outside paint shop a client wants, the company is now offering in-house graphics for owners who want the builder to handle the entire process. To that end, the first Mystic-painted 50-footer not in one color left the plant yesterday for delivery to repeat buyer Don Onken.

“It’s the first Mystic we’ve painted here that has not been one solid color,” said Cosker. “We have a new painter, Chuck Penwell, who has painted for Outerlimits, Hustler and Spectre. He’s clicked extremely well with the finishing and paint crew I already had in place, especially Steven Valle, one of my lead painters who has been with me for eight years.

“We have a Spies Hecker paint system in place now, and we’ll be doing more graphics on all of our boats,” he continued. “We’ll also offer repainting and new graphics to owners of other new and pre-owned boats.”

Onken is powering his new four-seat canopied 50-footer, which has an 18-inch longer running surface than a “standard” CS5000 cat, with four 1,700-hp E-85 engines connected in pairs with twin Arneson ASD-10 surface drives and a Latham rudder system. (Propellers for the cat are forged Hering 16-1/2″ x 39-1/2″ with 16-degree rake.) According to Cosker, the hatches for the canopy lid are integral to the canopy, which protects the occupants in the double-walled cockpit.

“This is the nicest finish we have had on a Mystic to date,” said Cosker. “We realize how important finish is to the poker run market, and we are putting all this in place to increase our focus on that.”
