NBC Sports to Air SBI Key West World Championships Again in 2017

For the third straight year, NBC Sports is going to showcase this year’s Key West World Championships in Q1 of 2017, according to a press release from Super Boat International, the offshore racing series behind the 36th annual event taking place in Key West, Fla., from Nov. 6-13.

Along with STIHL (producer of the No. 1-selling brand of chainsaws and a full line of outdoor power tools) and JM Associates, SBI is proud to announce the news that NBC Sports will once again provide three hours of programming to air early in 2017. According to the release, the coverage of the 2015 Key West World Championships was well received by fans and viewership. Back for another year, the presenting sponsor STIHL is leading the charge to showcase some of the best offshore racing competition in the world.

“With STIHL as presenting sponsor and the production team of JM Associates, we are fortunate, for the third year in a row, to show the world the best competitors in a world championship event,” said John Carbonell, president of SBI. “Teams come from around the world and know the place to be recognized as the ultimate world champion is here in Key West.”

Roger Phelps, corporate communications manager of STIHL, said the company is proud to be a part of bringing the races to fans around the world.

“We were first introduced to the Super Boat International races by the late J.R. Noble,” Phelps said. “STIHL is known for the power, precision and performance of our power tools, so this sport is a natural fit for us. We continue to be impressed with the event, and the popularity that the NBC Sports programs enjoy, so it was an obvious choice for us to return as the presenting sponsor.”

Mike McKinnis, JM Associates’ VP and executive producer, said his team has some new ideas in store for this year’s coverage.

“After the success of last year’s shows from Key West, we are excited to be producing three one-hour episodes which will air early in 2017,” McKinnis said. “With more coverage from the season events and the world championships, we have an even better opportunity to highlight a far more in-depth understanding of the sport and participating race teams.”

The anticipated airing is scheduled for the end of Q1 2017. The three one-hour shows will air on NBC sports with specific days and times to follow later this fall. SBI will provide more details when they become available on superboat.com.
