New Outerlimits Raceboat To Debut In Key West

While it was not beyond the realm of possibility that the new 39-foot offshore raceboat from Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats could be ready in time for Roar Offshore—the final event of the six-race American Power Boat Association Offshore Championship Series being produced by the Offshore Powerboat Association and Powerboat P1—October 10-12 in Fort Myers Beach, Fla., fans will get their first look at the canopied catamaran during the Race World Offshore Key West World Championships the following month. Given that the boat was not much more than a bare hull wrapped in graphics the day before its early August unveiling during the inaugural Outerlimits Factory Fun Run in Bristol, R.I., an early October completion was ambitious and optimistic from the start. So one involved with the project is particularly surprised at the time the project is taking.

The new 39-foot Outerlimits raceboat currently is being rigged in advance of the arrival of its Factory Billet engines at the headquarters for Miss GEICO offshore racing team.

That includes throttleman Vinnie Diorio, who will run the boat with driver, team co-owner and fellow longtime Outerlimits customer Simon Prevost, and Steve Curtis of Offshore Racing Services in Orlando and is managing the build-out of the Supercat-class 39-footer.

“We set up the cockpit, the drives are on and the engine mounts are done,” said Curtis. “Wiring is being done, fuel tanks are getting fitted and plumbing is just being started. So I think we have about a month of work to go. We want to make it really solid and functional—we have a really good team of guys with a huge amount of experience and knowledge

“The main thing for us is to get the setup right and allow Vinnie and Simon to get some good seat time before we go to its first race,” he continued. “We want to make it really solid and functional. It’s a really competitive class.”

Currently at the AMF Offshore Rigging Shop, the home of the Miss GEICO offshore racing team in Riviera Beach, Fla., the boat will be powered by twin 750-hp Factory Billet engines (as previously reported on speedonthewater.com). Diorio said they are hoping to receive the powerplants in early October. In the meantime, the Offshore Racing Services and AMF Offshore Rigging crews are doing everything they can to get the boat ready in advance of the engines’ arrival.

“The boat is coming along well,” he said. “But Key West will be our first race.”
