New Outerlimits SL 50 Hits 144 MPH in Testing, Heads to Key West

As this article goes live, Canadian Dave Scotto is almost three hours into hauling his brand-new, all-carbon-fiber Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats SL 50 V-bottom powered by twin power-adjustable Mercury Racing 1350/1550 engines from the boat builder’s headquarters in Bristol, R.I., to Miami for the Florida Powerboat Club’s upcoming Key West Poker Run. In testing earlier this week, the stand-up cockpit, half-cabin 50-footer reached 144 mph with the engines in 1350 mode, according to Dan Kleitz of Outerlimits.

“The guys worked so hard the past month and did a great job getting it finished in time for Key West,” said Kleitz. “We were only able to test it once—with one set of props—at the 1350 engine setting and it ran 144 mph right out of the box. I think it has a few more miles per hour in it at the 1350 setting. When it gets back from Key West, we’ll test it in 1550 mode.”

“Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god—that’s all I can say,” said Scotto via mobile phone as he headed south with the boat in tow on its Performane Custom Trailer. “It’s a beautiful boat, man. Now we’re just excited to go do the Key West Poker Run. Dan (Kleitz) is going to run with me as well as my main crew of Lorenzo, Tony, Joey and Julian.”

The stunning SL 50—Scotto’s last Outerlimits was an SL 52—was painted by Mark Morris at Visual Imagination in Peculiar, Mo. Its cabin and cockpit are finished in Alcantara fabric. Additional features include sculpted carpet in the cabin, carbon-fiber panels with custom paint accents in the cockpit, a “giant” Focal stereo system and a clear carbon-fiber bilge. With three-person bolsters that have power drop-out bottoms front and rear in the cockpit—the builder installed power-adjustable footrests for the rear bolster passengers while the forward footrests are molded into the boat’s sole—the longtime Outerlimits customer’s latest ride can seat six.

“It definitely has the largest Outerlimits name we’ve ever put on the side of the boat, and that’s what Dave wanted,” Kleitz said. “He’s our No. 1 supporter, that’s for sure, and his new boat is a really cool, bad-ass rig.”
