New Outerlimits SV 50 Hits 153 MPH In First Sea Trial

Yesterday’s first test run of a new all-carbon-fiber Outerlimits SV 50 sportboat yielded an impressive top speed of 153 mph in the waters near the custom boat builder’s facility in Bristol, R.I. According Outerlimits production manager Dan Kleitz, the Mercury Racing 1550/1350 engine-powered 50-footer made the 150-plus-mph run with its twin engines running in 1,550-hp mode. Earlier in the day, Kleitz said, the boat reached 147 mph with the engines in their 1,350-hp setting. Both runs were done with multiple passengers, including the boat’s owners Jason and Laurie Moe of Seattle, Wash., on board and 150 and 100 gallons of fuel (for the respective runs) in the tanks.

“There’s definitely more speed in the boat,” said Kleitz. “That was what it was able to do right out of the box in its first day on the water.”

Hull No. 4 since the SV 50 was introduced just in time for the 2013 Miami International Boat Show, the sit-down V-bottom includes a full cabin with facing lounges, stowage lockers and a V-berth and an Alcantara-finished cockpit with clear carbon-fiber footrests and seatbacks. The dash is equipped with dual Garmin GPS units, and the boat’s Focal stereo system was tuned by Waves And Wheels. Stephen Miles Design handled the boat’s graphic design and paintwork, which was carried into the 50-footer’s cockpit.

“Stephen Miles was incredible,” said Jason Moe. “It was like I was there with him the whole way through every step of painting the boat. I’m very grateful that Outerlimits has a guy on board working them like that.

“The boat exceeded my expectations,” he continued. “It’s a little lighter and a little faster than I thought it would be. It runs flats and straight and turns smoothly. It’s phenomenal.”

Said Laurie, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen land come up so quickly as when we were out yesterday.”

The Moes previously owned a 46-foot Outerlimits V-bottom built in 2006-2007. “Outerlimits did some special stuff for our 46, but comparing the new boat to it is like comparing a Volkswagen to a Lamborghini.”

The Moes plan to run the SV 50 this winter on Lake Washington, which is about 10 miles from their home in Maple Valley, before taking it to Desert Storm in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and several other events in 2017. Before then, they may even run it in the Florida Powerboat Club’s Key West (Fla.) Poker Run.

“We’re going to send pictures to Dan (Kleitz) in December of us running it in our snowmobile suits,” Laurie said the laughed. “We run our boat every weekend. We will be using it all year on Lake Washington.

“I think what I like most about the boat is it was made in America,” she added. “We are going to trailer it home tomorrow and be on Lake Washington by October 1.”

Even the Moe’s 11-year-old son, Colton, was impressed by what his mother called their new “family boat” after a ride yesterday.

“I like all the speed,” he said.

Said Kleitz of yesterday’s performance, “There’s definitely more speed in the boat.”
