New Powerplay 42-Foot Center Console Boasts Massive Cabin
Scheduled to debut later this week at the Miami International Boat Show, Powerplay Powerboat’s new center console features a 19-foot long cabin, according to Tom Mason, the owner of the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., performance center-console boat company. The stepped-hull 42-footer will be on display outside the Miami Convention Center during the event.
On display outside the Miami Convention Center (booth #3497) later this week, the new Powerplay 42-foot center console boasts an uncommonly spacious cabin.
“The 42 has a complete cabin with more than six feet of headroom, a full-size head compartment with a shower and a privacy door, and a real galley area,” Mason said.
Contract-built by Mystic Powerboats (read the story) of DeLand, Fla., the 10,500-pound model—minus its extensive T-top—reportedly ran 63 mph with a pair of 300-hp Mercury Verado outboard engines. To ensure the center console would still top 60 mph once the heavy T-top was installed, Powerplay outfitted the show model—in essence a working prototype—with twin 350-hp Yamaha outboards.
But the choice of power is much less intriguing than its placement. On the new 42-footer, the engines are mounted to the extreme port and starboard sides of the transom, much as they would on the sponsons of a catamaran.
“You can walk right off the back of the boat between the outboards,” Mason said. “People told us we couldn’t do it this way, and I said, ‘Why not?’ With the outboards where they are, the boat doesn’t just perform well. It handles better, has more stability and is better around the docks.”
