Nordic Prepping All-New 35 Flat Deck Cat For L.A. Boat Show Debut

The talented crew at Nordic Boats in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., is currently pushing hard to get its all-new outboard-powered sport catamaran finished in time to test the boat and display it at the upcoming Los Angeles Boat Show (Jan. 10-13). Dubbed the 35 Flat Deck, the true-tunnel 35-foot cat—Nordic’s popular outboard-powered 28 SS cat features center-pod design between the sponsons—is going to be powered by twin Mercury Racing Verado 400R engines and is designed to handle a quad-outboard configuration as well as sterndrive power if a customer wants to go that direction.

According to Bob Maguire, Nordic’s sales manager, the 35-footer features a full carbon/Kevlar layup to keep it lightweight, and is—at the moment—being capped in the front and rear. The interior team at Nordic is also working diligently on the cockpit details.

“We’re cranking to get this boat ready for L.A.,” said Maguire, who added that Nordic will have 10 models displayed at the show, which is held at the Fairplex in Pomona, Calif. “The plan is to have the boat on the water around Jan. 5 so we can test it and get some data to share with potential customers. As you can imagine, we have a lot of people asking us about this boat. The word has been out since we shared some ‘sneak peek’ pictures a few weeks ago, so we’ve had several inquiries.”

Maguire said the first 35 Flat Deck is Nordic’s demo boat—until the company sells it, of course—and that the six-seater is going to be a real head-turner. He’s planning to hold onto it for the boat show season, which for Nordic means L.A., Fred Hall (in Long Beach in early March) and Lake Havasu (in Arizona in early April).

Along with the unique gelcoat graphics package that was designed by the same guy who designed the boat itself—Nordic’s general manager Thane Tiemer—and the boat’s wide, sleek profile, Maguire said he’s most excited to have a true offshore offering from Nordic for the competitive, 30-plus-foot, sport cat market.

“We’ve proven ourselves with the 28 SS, and in fact we’re working on a new 28-footer at the moment that’s going to be powered by twin Mercury 300Rs, which should be here soon,” Maguire said. “If we get the engines in time, we’ll probably bring that boat to Fred Hall in March. It’s going to be a big year for us. We wanted something new and exciting, and we think the 35 Flat Deck is just the ticket.”
