Outerlimits Outboard Push Moving Forward With Sport Cat and Sportboat

With a couple of exceptions—most notably a beautiful SL 41 sportboat originally built for Michigan’s Dave Burgess and powered by triple Mercury Racing 400R outboard engines—Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats—always has built boats with stern-drive power. That makes sense given that most V-bottom and catamaran models in the Bristol, R.I., boat builder’s arsenal are more than 40 feet long and built to run fast and handle rough water.

But Dan Kleitz, Jason Amaral and the rest of the team at Outerlimits aren’t blind to the reality that the outboard engine power movement is here to stay, and to that end they are working on a new outboard-powered 36-foot catamaran—as previously reported on speedonthewater.com—and an outboard version of its SV 29, both the smallest offerings in the builder’s catamaran and V-bottom lines.

Outerlimits is shooting for a June debut for the outboard-powered SV 29.

Both boats will be equipped with V-8s from Mercury Racing. Twin supercharged 450R outboards will power the cat. For the V-bottom, Outerlimits is going with a pair of naturally aspirated 300R outboards.

“Right now, the plug for the new cat has been buffed out and we will be starting on the mold next week,” said Kleitz. “Tooling for the deck will be started in December. We’re hoping to unveil the first one in June 2020.”

According to Kleitz, the cat has a 36-foot running surface and an overall length of more than 37 feet. While the model only will be offered with a carbon fiber layup and 450R outboards will be “standard power,” buyers also will be able to order the boat with 400R outboards.

“It’s a big boat, a true 36, with six seats, a 22-inch Garmin GPS and two nine-inch Mercury Marine VesselView monitors standard,” he said. “The cockpit will be really nice—the whole boat will be everything you expect from an Outerlimits.”

Though the first outboard-powered SV 29 was ordered with twin 300Rs, it could be ordered with either twin 400R or 450R outboards. But Kleitz said he doesn’t think that’s necessary.

With the plug for the 36-foot cat complete, Outerlimits will start on the mold next week.

“The SV 29 runs great a 600-hp stern-drive engine, so we think twin 300Rs outboards is the perfect package for it,” he said.

Pricing has not been released for either model.

“For a limited time, we’re going to offer special introductory pricing on the outboard cat and V-bottom,” said Kleitz. “People who are seriously interested should call me directly.”
