Outerlimits Unveils 'Edgy' SV 50 at Lake of the Ozarks Shootout

Though the members of the Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats crew weren’t sure if their newest 50-foot canopied V-bottom would be ready for the long haul from Bristol, R.I., to Central Missouri for the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, they finished just in time and managed to make it to the annual aquatic top-speed event. The all-white canopied SV 50 sportboat, which is powered by twin Mercury Racing 1550 engines, won’t compete in the event—it hit the water for the first time yesterday—but it has drawn a crowd at the dock’s of Captain Ron’s Lakeside Bar and Grill, the host venue for this weekend’s competition.

Built for Outerlimits company principal Joe Sgro, the all-carbon-fiber-and-epoxy 50-footer showcases a new deck design.

“It’s our first boat with this deck design and it has more sharp edges and hard angles than our other designs,” Sgro said. “It’s edgy. Mike Fiore (the founder of Outerlimits) was a big fan of Lamborghinis and this deck has that look. If you look at our interiors, especially in this boat, they also have that Lamborghini-ish look. The boats we are making right now are kind of a tribute to the looks that Mike loved.”

From the beginning, Srgo said, he wanted the boat to be white.

“The idea behind going all white is that all Outerlimits have beautiful, natural lines—they have so much dock appeal,” he said. “So I brought this boat here plain white to show how beautiful it is even without any ‘artificial’ colors. Obviously, anybody can have it painted any way they like—it’s a blank canvas—but it’s a natural beauty.”

Because the boat’s throttles and shifters are between the bucket seats for the co-pilot and driver and the space between those seats is narrow, Outerlimits built the boat’s canopy with front and rear hatches. That way, the three passengers riding in the bucket seats aft can climb in and out of the cockpit with ease. Each seat is equipped with Simpson five-point restraints.

The cockpit is set up with a dual-helm configuration for two-person operation. The builder intentionally limited amenities in the interior, which is finished in Alcantara, to an air-conditioning system and a stereo.

Sgro said it’s possible, but not likely, that the new SV 50 might make it to Key West, Fla., for the upcoming Florida Powerboat Club Key West Poker Run and Super Boat International World Championships in November.

“I’d like to have it there but I’m just not sure,” he said. “I am racing in Key West and we’re within one point of first place right now (in the Superboat Extreme class) and that’s our priority. Sometimes if you try to do too much you don’t do anything well.

“Outerlimits is doing great,” he continued. “We have a lot of new interest in our cats now with a couple of 46s on order and a bunch of V-bottoms, but we can only produce so many of them. We don’t want to produce a lot of boats. We only want to produce the best.”
