Outerlimits Update: First 44-Foot Center Console in the Mold

In the works for more than a year, the first Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats 44 center console (CC) is the mold according to Dan Kleitz, the production manager for the Bristol, R.I., custom high-performance V-bottom and catamaran company. Based on the SL 44 sportboat hull, the new center console is—with its 10-foot, 2-inch beam—a foot wider than the SL 44.

As busy as Outerlimits is inside, it’s a little slower outside the factory when it comes to testing. Said Kleitz, “We’re just waiting for the snow to melt and the ice to thaw on the launch ramp.”

“We actually split an SL 44 in half to create the tooling for the 44 CC,” Kleitz said. “We’re hoping to have it finished this summer.”

As reported earlier on the speedonthewater.com, a new SL 44 will go to the Stephen Miles Design paint shop in Indiana next week (read the story). The eleventh SL 44 created since the model was introduced, it’s headed to a Canadian buyer and will be the owner’s second V-bottom from Outerlimits.

While Kleitz said the company’s first 39-foot offshore racing catamaran, which is headed to the Spirit of Qatar team headquarters in Orlando, Fla., and will be powered by twin 750-hp Ilmor Marine engines, “hasn’t changed a whole lot” since its debut at last month’s Miami International Boat Show, the Outerlimits crew has started working on its first pleasure version of the cat. (According to team manager Steve Curtis, the Spirit of Qatar team should be picking up their new 39-foot raceboat for Superboat-class catamaran racers Billy Moore and Ali Al Neeama in the next few weeks, as the team will handle engine installation, rigging and set up in house.) Likely to be called the 39 SC catamaran in keeping with the company’s name for its 46-footer, the first smaller pleasure cat will be powered by a pair of Mercury Racing 1100s engines.

In addition to those projects, said Kleitz, the company is starting lamination on a new SL 50 V-bottom. And they still have to dial in the new SL 41 (read the story) V-bottom the builder unveiled at the Miami International Boat Show last month.

“We’re just waiting for the snow to melt and the ice to thaw on the launch ramp,” Kleitz said.
