Photo Essay: Rowdy Times At The Point Pleasant Beach Grand Prix

Given the Offshore Powerboat Association’s ongoing, high-profile collaboration with Powerboat P1 in producing the six-stop American Power Boat Association Offshore Championship Series, it’s easy to forget that OPA still has four races of its own. And the Point Pleasant Beach Grand Prix—the first of those OPA-exclusive contests—happened last weekend at the historic New Jersey Shore venue.

Known for serving up rough water, the Point Pleasant Beach venue lived up to its reputation and veteran offshore racing photographer Tim Sharkey was there to capture the action. Speedonthewater.com wasn’t on scene to cover the event, but you can find full results from the event on OPA website. Thanks to Sharkey, though, we present this photo gallery of high-flying action.

The next race on the pure OPA roster is the Lake Hopatcong Grand Prix Sept. 6-8 in New Jersey, followed by Ocean City Grand Prix Sept. 27-29 in Maryland and the organization’s Englewood Beach/Waterfest World Championships Nov. 21-24 in Florida. The APBA Offshore Championship Series resumes July 7 with the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix in Florida.
