Photo Essays: Final Views from the Texas Outlaw Challenge

The Gone Again Skater wasn’t the fastest boat in the Texas Outlaw Challenge top-speed shootout—the Low Altitude Mystic took that honor this year—but it’s always a crowd-pleaser. Photo courtesy/copyright Jim Winters/Speedonthewater.com

How “big” is the Texas Outlaw Challenge? Big enough to warrant two more photo essays from the eighth annual Houston area-based event, which concluded yesterday, in addition to the two photo essays already published during the weekend on speedonthewater.com. By most accounts, this year’s Texas Outlaw Challenge was as good at it’s ever been—maybe even the best it’s been—in the past seven years.

Professional photographer and custom neon sign-maker Jim “Bulldog” Winters was in town to shoot the event, and he brought back some compelling images, particularly of Kenny Mungle’s 32-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran Gone Again during Friday’s top-speed shootout. (The turbine-powered 50-foot Mystic catamaran Low Altitude took top honors in the shootout with a 201.8-mph run.) While Winters’ images have appeared on speedonthewater.com in the past, this is his first series of photos for the site.

Contributing photographer Yvonne Aleman, who “moonlights” as a certified public accountant, has provided yet another gallery from the event—her third in three days. Aleman focused her final gallery on the lower-speed and more social-aspects of Friday evening, as well as Saturday’s poker run.
