Since catching his first offshore race in Key West, Fla., in 2010, Rodney Olson of Full Speed Photography has been hooked on shooting high-performance boats. The self-taught, 45-year-old photographer is based in Rochester, N.Y., which has enabled him to shoot relatively “local” go-fast pleasure boating events such as the Buffalo and 1,000 Islands/Alexandria Bay poker runs in addition to traveling to shoot offshore racing.

“I have tried to learn from my mistakes and gather as much information and constructive criticism from the folks who have been in this for quite a while,” said Olson, who cites veteran go-fast boat photographer Pete Boden of Shoot 2 Thrill Pix as a significant influence and a mentor. “Last year was an off year for me due to some personal issues, but I am already making plans to come back in 2016 better than ever. My main focus this year is to be competitive in taking some of the best shots in the boating industry whether they are of offshore races, poker runs or fun runs.”

A self-described “free agent” in the go-fast boating photography world, Olson said he plans to shoot the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Central Missouri in 2016.

“We are rolling out there from New York with a good-size pack of boats in tow and I am really stoked for that, as well as for some incredible events in my own ‘backyard’ including the Buffalo Poker Run and the Chicken Wing Fun Run near Syracus, both of which draw a huge turnouts of boats,” he said.
