Pre-Orders Strong for Sunsation Center Console

With the hull plug complete and a hull mold soon to be finished, the deck tooling in progress and an end-of-summer completion date for Sunsation’s first 34-foot-center console release still a goal, the Algonac, Mich., semi-custom boat builder already has ten orders for the new model. That’s according to Wayne Schaldenbrand, who co-owns the company with his brother, Joe.

If all goes to plan, the Sunsation crew should complete the company’s first 34-foot center console by the end of the summer.

“This is going to be the first year in our history that we don’t have to worry about orders to fill in the winter,” Schaldenbrand said, and then laughed. “We’re going to have to burn some candlelight to finish the first 34 center console by the end of summer—we started about three weeks late—but we still think we can get it done.”

Tooling for the 34-footer’s deck currently is being completed at Vector Works in South Florida. The deck will incorporate the boat’s cabin, much of which will be under the center console. Once Sunsation receives the deck tooling it will create a mock-up of the cabin so all molded parts specifications can be finalized—and non-molded parts can be precisely fitted—before the first model is built.

“It’s a way of cutting some time off the project and for us in the factory to get the cabin exactly the way we want it,” said Schaldenbrand.

Schaldenbrand added that the company’s overall business appears to be picking up.

“The sportboats seem to be coming around,” he said. “We just got another order for a 36 with (Mercury Racing) 700s. It seems to be clicking right now.”
