Project Cállate: Demo, Prep and More Prep
A month ago speedonthewater.com brought you the first installment of Project Cállate, a series following a 2005 Skater Powerboats 368 catamaran from Douglas Marine that’s receiving a complete makeover by its new owner Larry Guillen of Huntington Beach, Calif.
The 2005 36-foot catamaran is currently being prepped for paint by the crew at E-Ticket Peformance Boats in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.
Behind the leadership of Brad Stewart of E-Ticket Performance Boats in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., the 36-footer has been chopped, hacked, sanded and much more en route to becoming a “new” boat over the past several weeks.
“We’ve done a lot of tearing this boat apart so it’s going to be nice to really start working on it soon,” said Stewart, who expects the boat to be fully prepped for paint by the end of next week. “The boat is currently sitting at 220-grit, all sanded down and ready to start fairing in the windshield receiver. We started by 80-gritting the whole boat, which took about two weeks and there’s still some paint on there. Paint on top of paint isn’t easy to remove.”
He added that the boat, which will be painted in house, is going to need be sanded down with 800-grit before the special metallic DuPont paint can be applied. But first, Stewart and company will work on fitting the wraparound windshield receiver and getting the fairing smoothed and primed so that no one would ever know the boat had triple quarter canopies on the deck. Then it’s off to be primed, sealed and painted.
“This is going to be a fun project—it’s going to be a neat boat once we’re finished,” Stewart said. “It’s turned into be a little bigger than I was expecting because we weren’t going to paint it originally. Beyond that, the problem is that everything you thought you could use either has to be modified or replaced.”
