Plans for an offshore powerboat race in Qatar—initially launched as a joint effort between the Qatar Marine Sports Federation and Super Boat International—in early 2014 have been scuttled. That’s the word out of the Qatar Marine Sports Federation.

“QMSF are very sorry to inform you due to circumstances beyond our control, we will not be able to hold the event in Qatar as planned this January,” said Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani, the president of the organization and driver for the team’s turbine-powered Al Adaa’am 96 Mystic catamaran in a letter to the race teams. “Unfortunately there simply were not enough boats committed to going.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the teams that showed an interest in participating in the Qatar Cup and we hope we are able to organize another event in the near future that you will be able to join us in,” he added. “Looking forward to seeing you all in Key West.”
