Rookie Moves in Key West, Part V: Making Downtime Count

The Maxed Out Offshore Racing team had a great day in our second race of the Super Boat International Offshore World Championships in Key West, Fla. As we did Wednesday, we finished fourth in our class yesterday. The boat ran awesome and we figured out that it corners extremely well. Yesterday’s conditions were a bit different than those on Wednesday, most notably on the outside leg between turns No. 1 and No. 2 where it was a little rougher.

As a team, we decided to take a little break from racing this morning and acted like tourists. We rented jet skis from Fury Water Sports and took a 90-minute tour around Key West. It was a great way to get away for some R&R I  highly recommend trying it.

A little bonding, personal watercraft style, was a must for the Maxed Out Offshore Racing team today.

During the race yesterday we found the cause of our water-pump issue. The engine had too much water pressure, which blew the water pump housing apart. After a trip to the local hardware store we resolved the problem with a gate valve, hose and fittings. We just tested the boat and were able to adjust to achieve the correct pressure.

Weather has picked up in Key West and looks like it will be a lot rougher tomorrow. Winds are expected to be out of the east/northeast at 18 to 20 mph. Also there is a seventy percent chance of rain. All of this will make for some interesting racing.
