San Diego Bayfair Ready to Deliver High-Octane Fun

As the H1 Unlimited teams prepare for this weekend’s Diamond Cup Race in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, the Southern California town of San Diego is getting excited to host the thunder boats in a couple of weeks.
Celebrating its 49th year on Mission Bay, San Diego Bayfair moves into the fast lane Sept. 13-15 with the return of the H1 Unlimited hydroplanes, a Metal Mulisha freestyle motocross exhibition and expanded live music.
Along with the H1 Unlimited tour’s 2013 season finale, Bayfair has enhanced the three-day event by bringing in the ever-popular Metal Mulisha, featuring top freestyle motocross riders Jimmy Fitzpatrick and Derrick Garland. And for fans of big horsepower, the piston-powered boats of the Grand Prix West tour returns after a one-year hiatus.
Expanding the entertainment on the land, Bayfair is adding a second concert stage. Race fans on Crown Point and East Vacation Island can watch 28 of the top up-and-coming bands from the San Diego Region presented by Manzanita Brewing Company. Also on Crown Point there will be a craft brew festival with local vendors offering specialty foods from around the world as well as a Kids Expo Zone courtesy of El Cajon Toyota.
“For fans of extreme sports, Bayfair weekend can’t be missed,” said Jeff Thomas, president of San Diego Bayfair Board of Governors. “Whether you love music, food, fast boats or freestyle motocross, Bayfair has you covered.”
Nearly 100,000 people are expected to attend Bayfair over three days. The Vendor Village on East Vacation Island, which includes a concert stage, is open to the public and no ticket is required. A paid admission ($25 for single day and $45 for a three-day Super Pass) is required to view the 12 classes of boat races and the freestyle motocross exhibition.
To honor the men and women of the Armed Forces, San Diego Bayfair is hosting a Military Appreciation Day on Saturday (Sept. 14). Active military and reservists get into the race free with valid ID, while family members can purchase half-price tickets. With the support of radio stations 100.7 Jack FM and 760 KFMB AM, visitors can videotape messages that will be sent to military personnel stationed overseas.
“Bayfair has always been big a supporter of the military,” Thomas said. “The drivers and teams look forward to meeting and taking pictures with the soldiers and their families.”
In the competitive H1 field, Oh Boy! Oberto driver Steve David is looking to bring home his third straight Bill Muncey Cup and wrap up the national points championship.
