Second Nor-Tech 298 to Hit the Water Next Week

Nor-Tech Hi-Performance Boats’ second 29-foot-long center console will be tested on the water next week, according to Terry Sobo, the director of sales and marketing for the Cape Coral, Fla., custom boat builder. Dubbed the 298 Sport Center Console, the 29-footer is the second model to be finished and the first to be powered by outboard engines—the first model was equipped with a single 370-hp Yanmar V-8 diesel engine and went to a buyer in Norway.

Power for the newest 298 out of the molds is a pair of 300-hp Mercury Verado engines. “We expect it to top 70 mph with that power package,” said Sobo.

While the first Nor-Tech 298 (shown here) was powered by a single diesel engine, the second, which will be tested next week, will be powered by a pair of 300-hp Mercury Verado outboard engines.

While the planned spring release of the 29-footer didn’t go according to schedule, Sobo said he has been “pleasantly surprised” with the reception of the new center console model, which joins 34- and 39-footers, since its summer introduction. (A 42-foot addition to Nor-Tech’s center console family should be ready sometime in 2013). According to Sobo, the company currently has six orders for the 298, as well as a number of orders for both the 340 and the larger 390, which is available with Open, Cuddy and Tournament interior layouts.

“We’ve been busier than all get-out,” said Sobo.
