Sgro and Cangiano Teaming Up for Key West Worlds
With last weekend’s Super Boat International New York Grand Prix behind them, the new Superboat Extreme-class Outerlimits team of driver Joe Sgro and throttleman Giancarlo Cangiano have announced plans to race together in Sgro’s SV 43 offshore raceboat at the SBI Key West Offshore World Championships in November. While the team used the New York race as a “tune-up” event in the 43-footer, which is powered by Mercury Racing 1350 engines and recently set a 152-mph V-bottom class record at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, Cangiano said they hope to get in more practice and testing time before the Key West event.

“To experience the race in New York—it was fantastic,” said the Italian throttleman, who came to the New York City race—his first in the United States—with two Powerboat P1 world titles and one SuperStock world title to his credit. “I am very lucky because I throttle. I got to look at the skyline.
“The speeds are like those what we had in the Evolution class when I ran an Outerlimits,” he added. “I’m with Outerlimits forever.”
Mike Fiore, the founder and owner of Bristol, R.I., custom V-bottom and catamaran company, said he is looking forward to seeing Sgro, his longtime friend racing partner and Cangiano team up for the Key West.
“I think they’ll do well, and there’s some tough competition like Peter Meyer in Insitgator in the Superboat Extreme class,” said Fiore. “Key West usually has a good turn out, and we’re eager to race there.”
