Skater Flush With Big-Power, Big-Boat Builds

Though Skater Powerboats in Douglas, Mich., is on a state-mandated three-week hiatus that began today in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company is in the middle of several significant builds. That’s the word from Tony Cutsuries, the company’s national sales manager.

This 38-foot Skater cat is one of several boats in line to be finished when the company resumes normal operations (click to enlarge).

“Right now, it’s all big stuff with mostly big power,” he said. “I have an eight-seat 368 with Mercury Racing 1100s that we were finishing up. The customer wanted to pick it up this weekend, but due to the shutdown there will be a delay.”

Dubbed Maverick, a Skater 388 catamaran with eight seats will be rigged with 1,100-hp Sterling Performance engines. Another eight-seat 38-footer in progress will be set up with Mercury Racing 1100 engines.

And though it doesn’t fall into the same “big-power” category with its Mercury Racing 700SCi engines, as previously reported on speedonthewater.com a Skater 368 called Fair Chase is next in line for the Skater paint booth when the company reopens.

Despite the shutdown and uncertainty, Cutsuries said the Skater crew is staying upbeat. “We’re all good,” he said. “And as soon as we can we’ll get right back to work.”
