A frequent contributor to speedonthewater.com, Conn Saloumidis and his daughter, Tae, were competing in the first race of the 2017 Australia Offshore Superboat Championship series in Queensland, Australia, when things got a little wonky and they rolled their outboard engine-powered SUV SIMRAD canopied catamaran
“We had completed nine of 11 laps and were rounding the northernmost turn buoy for a port turn,” said the senior Saloumidis. “The boat caught a wave on the port bow, dug in and took us over. We landed on the roof.”

The veteran throttleman and his driver-daughter were unhurt and exited the catamaran through its underside escape hatch.
“A bit of father-daughter bonding time, they said,” Saloumidis wrote on his Facebook page. “Wee are both OK. The boat is undamaged, the engines are running and we are in Bowen to watch the upcoming Offshore Superboats battle it out this weekend. A huge thank-you to the rescue boat crews—who towed us in and recovered our cowlings—and to our Race Control Team, divers and crane logistics for righting the boat with no damage. I am humbled by the offers of help and wishes from all over the world from our offshore family.”
