Smith Not Returning To Checkmate

Marine industry veteran Doug Smith, the founder of Baja Marine and former owner of 50-year-old Checkmate Boats in Bucyrus, Ohio, will not be rejoining the company. That’s the word out of Checkmate Marine Power, Inc., which is owned by Global Marine Power, the parent company of that owns Hustler Powerboats in Calverton, N.Y.

“Doug Smith has decided to take his skills and talent in another direction,” said Joe LoGiudice, the president of Checkmate Marine Power, Inc., in a press release from the company. “The LoGiudice family would like to wish him much success in his future endeavors.”

According to the release, the decision for Smith not to return to Checkmate was “mutual.” The company, which offers a line of 18- to 30-foot stern drive- and outboard-powered sportboats, recently released its first model, which went to a buyer in Wisconsin, under new ownership. The next boat expected to be delivered from Checkmate is a 250 SFX center console model with a single Mercury Verado 300 outboard engine.
