Sneak Peek: Boat Customs Reinvents Skater 30

In any successful makeover project, the main goal is for the object of affection—boat, car, kitchen, human, etc.—to come out looking better than the original. That’s not too difficult when something isn’t particularly attractive to begin with, but when the original is a stunner the challenge is significant.

Such is the case with the 2005 Skater 30 Prototype catamaran currently in paint at Boat Customs in Caledonia, Mich. Owned by Dale Rayzor of Discovery Bay, Calif., the 30-footer is being painted by Boat Customs proprietor Chris Mills in advance of its repower move from inboard engines with stern drives to Mercury Racing Verado 400R outboard engines.

The change from red-hot to icy cool colors is so dramatic—and breathtaking—that even those familiar with the cat probably won’t recognize it. And the Thomas Kulesia, II-designed paintjob isn’t done yet.

“It turned out better than I ever imagined,” said Rayzor. “Chris is an incredible painter and Thomas came up with a brilliant design. The green graphic is all getting matte clear sprayed over it, and that will really put it over the top.”
