Southern and Pyburn Teaming Up to Run Pure Platinum at Shootout

Looking forward to competing in the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout for the third time, Kentucky performance boater David Southern told speedonthewater.com that he is planning to drive his 38-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran Pure Platinum with the boat’s previous owner, Florida’s Bill Pyburn, on the throttles in the 28th annual event later this month.

“Bill is going to run with me, barring any scheduling issues that come up, and we’re hoping to put up a number close to 180 mph this year,” said Southern, adding that his 163-mph top speed in the 388 last year with his friend, Garth Tagge, throttling was low because of a faulty trim pump that locked the port drive in a positive position and a computer mapping issue with his turbocharged engines from Chief Performance. “We should have some pretty solid competition between Garth’s 36-foot Skater and Summer Richardson’s 388. After the number Garth posted (188 mph) at the GLOC Shootout in Oklahoma (read the story), he’s going to be tough to beat. I don’t even want to run that fast.”

Southern, who also participated in the Shootout in 2014 and ran 140 mph in his previous boat, a 36-foot Skater, said he likes the closed-course format the event provides.

“I like not having people that could run out in front of me at any moment,” he laughed. “The Shootout is great because it’s a closed course with good water and they keep the spectators way back away from the competitors. Of course they have all the rescue personnel right there, which is nice to know.”
