Spartan Powerboat Club Scores With Memorial Day Weekend Run

To fire up its Garden State-based supporters, the new Spartan Powerboat Club held its inaugural Gala Dinner and Comedy Night at Joey Harrison’s River House in Forked River, N.J., in April. That event, by all accounts, was a good-time success, but the real proof of the club’s momentum was on display—and on the water—yesterday at its Memorial Day Weekend Fun Run out of Barnegat Bay Marina.

The run, which attracted 32 high-performance catamarans, V-bottom sportboats and center consoles departed yesterday morning for its lunch stop—a return to Joey Harrison’s River House—before heading to a raft-up on Tice Shoal.

“I couldn’t be more excited about how it went,” said Del Flores, the founder and president of Spartan Powerboat Club, who ran his recently rewrapped 39-foot Velocity V-bottom in the event. “We had 32 boats and about 75 people. Everyone respected the waterway, and each other. There were no low points.”

Next up for the club is its first Atlantic City Poker Run, which will depart from the Marine Unlimited facility in Toms River on June 21, to the Golden Nugget Resort and Casino.

“We are going to take over the E-Dock,” said Flores. “I have all that reserved. I have rooms blocked and we’re going to have a banquet where we play our poker hands, announce our sponsors and awards for the best boat, the sexist crew, all that stuff. I don’t have all the details work out on the awards yet, but I will.”

At present, the final event on the Spartan Powerboat Club is the Barnegat Bay Marina Fun Run and Open House on August 30.
