St. Clair River Classic Returning With New Dates For 2021

A staple on the Offshore Powerboat Association circuit, the St. River Classic in the Detroit Metro area will return in 2021. But it will happen July 30 through August 2, rather than its original dates of July 23-25, according to organizer Bob Currier.

Currier informed his fellow venue producers, as well as OPA president Ed “Smitty” Smith and Azam Rangoonwala of Powerboat P1 of the date change via email earlier this week.

“Due to a conflict with the Bayview Yacht Club Port Huron to Mackinac sailboat race—scheduled for July 24—the St. Clair River Classic will be held July 30, 31 and August 1,” Currier wrote. “We would not been able to pull a Coast Guard permit for the same weekend.”

In 2019, the St. Clair River Classic was the fourth contest in the inaugural six-race American Power Boat Association Offshore Championship Series, which was the product of a collaboration between OPA and P1—both APBA member-organizations. Like all events in the series, The St. Clair races were cancelled this year.

The schedule change translates to back-to-back weekend action for offshore racers and their fans in the Midwest, as the Great Lakes Grand Prix in Michigan City, Ind., is scheduled for August 5-8.

“Our event will always be scheduled Thursday through Sunday on the first weekend in August,” said Rick Wright, the lead organizer for the event on the southern Lake Michigan. “That’s already in place.”
