Sunday Fun Day: Craig and Patti Mears

When it comes to Sunday Fun Days, our friends in Louisiana—Craig and Patti Mears—have more experience than most. The husband and wife, who live on the Tickfaw River in Springfield and grew up in and around the Louisiana waterways, own a 32-foot Sunsation Boats V-bottom with twin MerCruiser 496 Mag engines and an outboard-powered 30-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran, and spend most of their free time on the water.

Located just a “stone’s throw away” from Blood River Landing, the host location for the popular Tickfaw 200 Poker Run, the Mears’ home includes instant access to the waterways via any of their boats as well as plenty of options of places to go to include an enjoyable day on the water.

“Generally a Sunday Fun Day at home would include a few stops on the water with a couple of meeting places scheduled with some of our friends,” Craig said. “From our house, we usually stop at Boopalu’s, then Tin Lizzy’s Landing. From there we might hit Prop Stop or one of the local sandbars and then head to Sun Buns and maybe even over to Madisonville. We have a lot of options, which is great.”

Craig made sure to give credit to Bryce Savoy of Geaux Pro Detailing in Maurepas, La., for helping maintain his boats as well as Denny from Geaux Signs and Graphics in Gonzales, La., for wrapping the Skater he bought three years ago. Nick Compton from Island Audio, also in Maurepas, has been instrumental in bringing the entertainment factor to the Mears’ boats as well.

Craig and Patti Mears took several friends out in their 30-foot Skater during the 2016 Tickfaw 200 Poker Run.

“We’re lucky to have choices for when we want to go boating,” Craig said. “Of course, I’m partial to the outboard power and the performance of the Skater, but we love our Sunsation, too. In fact Patti prefers the V-bottom.”

At the moment the Mears’ Skater is at TNT Custom Marine getting repowered with twin Mercury Racing Verado 400R engines. Craig said he expects the catamaran to be finished in a couple of weeks and be ready in time for the Joey Gratton Memorial New Years Day Fun Run in Sarasota, Fla.

Once the boat is back home, the Sunday Fun Day choice should get a little more interesting.
