Sunsation Sees Rise In Mid-Cabin Sportboat Demand

While Sunsation’s 34 CCX and 29 CCX have received the lion’s share of sales and media attention of late for the Algonac, Mich., boat builder, buyer interest and sales of its 28- and 32-foot mid-cabin sportboats reportedly are increasing. That’s the word from Joe Schaldenbrand, one of the owners of the company.

“We’re definitely seeing an up-tick in that side of the market,” said Schaldenbrand. “There’s nobody out there really building mid-cabin sportboats now to my knowledge. We are seeing a trend toward more open-floor-plan boats and with a mid-cabin you get the best of both worlds—you have a sportboat but you still a place for the kids to get out of the weather if the need to. We’ve been getting quite a few calls on them.”

In response to what the company principals believe will be a buying, they are offering aggressive pricing in the 28-footer and 32-foot mid-cabin models for the 2014. With a single 380-hp 8.2L MerCruiser engine, the 28-foot offering lists for $114,900. With a pair of those engines, the 32-foot model lists for $174,900.

“I see the up-tick in mid-cabins a good sign for the entire sportboat market,” said Schaldenbrand. “I think it’s starting to come back.”
