Supercat Racing Group In For Clearwater

After a conference call last night, the Supercat Racing owners group has decided that it will participate in the Race World Offshore event in Clearwater, Fla. As previously reported on speedothewater.com, the Supercat Racing Owners Group is running its own internal, seven-race championship series with one “drop race.” That means teams can run seven races, drop their worst result and combine their best six races to vie for the group’s 2020 title. As also reported, all races—including what contest each team selects as its seventh—must be American Power Boat Associated-sanctioned to count in the points chase. (At present, the Offshore Powerboat Association, Powerboat P1 and Race World Offshore groups all run under the APBA-sanctioning umbrella.)

The official 2020 Supercat Racing group schedule is as follows:

• May 14-17—Cocoa Beach, Fla.
• June 26-28—Sarasota, Fla.
• May 28-30—Lake Ozark, Mo.
• July 24-26—St. Clair, Mich.
• July 31-August 2—Michigan City, Ind.
• September 25-27—Clearwater, Fla.
• October 8-10—Fort Myers Beach, Fla.
• November 8-15—Key West, Fla.

New to the mix, however, are points for teams unable to make a race.

“If a team doesn’t show up, it will automatically be awarded 10th-place points,” Mauff said. “We all are busy running our own businesses, and personal things come up. That way, later in the season, it will encourage teams that miss a race to show up rather than thinking they’re out of contention and there’s no reason to continue. They may not be in contention to win our championship if they miss a race, but they still could be fighting for second or third place.”

Mauff said the organization—Offshore Powerboat Association, Powerboat P1 or Race World Offshore—behind each event is far less important to his group than the venues themselves, the fans and the teams. And that was the foundation for the group’s 2020 schedule decision.

“We really don’t care who produces what anymore—they all have good race sites,” he said. “We just want to establish those sites for the fans, because in going with just one group or the other the fans, not just the racers, suffer.”
