Cold fall weather in Douglas, Mich., yesterday didn’t stop noted performance boat enthusiast Ron Szolack and Randy Sweers of Fastboats Marine Group from braving the elements to hit Lake Michigan for a test run of the new Skater Powerboats 40 SS catamaran ordered by Szolack. Twin Mercury Racing 1350 engines power the cat.

Szolack said he had Skater build the 40-footer “on spec.” A Fastboats client joined Szolack and Sweers in Douglas for the cat’s first sea trial. (Szolack keeps a couple of his boats at Hidden Harbor—also the headquarters for Fastboats Marine Group—near his second home on Pompano Beach, Fla.)

“It was great,” Szloack said. “We just took it up to 140 mph and it ran flawlessly.”

That was enough to convince the client to buy, and once again Szolack didn’t get the chance to take possession of a new model he ordered. But at least this time around, Szloack, who is well known in the go-fast powerboat community for selling boats he orders before he takes possession of them, got to drive it—even if it were on a cold day in Michigan.

“Tuesday I am flying to Fort Lauderdale to take possession of my new center console from John Cosker at Mystic Powerboats,” Szolack said. “Two new boats in less than one week—that’s pretty cool.”

Szolack added that he plans to keep the Mystic M4200 for the winter at his Pompano Beach home. He does not, as of yet, have a buyer for the luxury center console.
