Team AMSOIL Skater Plans to Resurface in St. Clair

After taking a season off following the disintegration of the Super Cat Lite class, which featured 36- to 42-foot catamarans with twin 525-hp Mercury Racing engines, the Team AMSOIL offshore race boat is returning to action in less than two weeks.

According to team owner and throttleman Bob Teague of Teague Custom Marine in Valencia, Calif., the team is thrashing to make it to the next Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) race—the St. Clair River Classic in the welcoming Michigan town of St. Clair (July 25-27). Admittedly one of his favorite places to race, Teague said he’s looking forward to running the boat again in front of the St. Clair fans.

amsoil engine assembly“We sat out a year to see how everything was going to shake out,” said Teague, who expressed his gratitude toward AMSOIL and a long list of other supporters—Brodix, CP Carillo, FST Performance, Holley, Isky Racing Cams, Jesel, Lifeline, Livorsi, Manley Performance, MSD, Weldon Racing Pumps and World Products. “We’re building the engines for our boat and are excited to get back out on the racecourse. We have some dialing in to do, but we’re going to be as competitive as always.”

Teague said his son, John, is going to handle the wheel of the 36-foot catamaran in the team’s first race in OPA’s Super Cat class—boats powered by twin 750-hp engines with the same rules as the Superboat class in Super Boat International (SBI). When available, longtime teammate Paul Whittier will join Teague in the cockpit.

Teague said the team is committed to the OPA race in Port Huron, Mich. (Aug. 6-8), and plans to compete in select SBI races. He also said the team had to add an extra 1,000 pounds to the Skater—the shortest boat in the class—because it wasn’t heavy enough.

In other St. Clair-related news, the Cleveland Construction Super Cat team is working hard to have the boat ready for its hometown race after rolling the 38-foot Skater at the SBI race in Sarasota, Fla., in early July.
