Team Speedster Ready To Race Class 4 In Key West And Englewood Beach

Although the last time he competed at the offshore racing world championships in Key West, Fla., he ended the day upside down in a Skater Powerboats catamaran, Dan MacNamara of Team Archer Marine and Speedster Powerboats in Southern California is excited to be returning to Key West next week.

MacNamara told speedonthewater.com he’s going to be racing with driver Eric Treadwell of Philadelphia during next week’s Race World Offshore Key West Championships (Nov. 3-10) as well as at the Offshore Powerboat Association World Championships in Englewood Beach, Fla., later in the month (Nov. 21-24).

MacNamara and Treadwell are planning to run under the Team Speedster moniker in the Speedster Powerboats prototype 32-foot pleasure boat in the Class 4 bracket class. According to MacNamara, the team’s showing in Key West and Englewood Beach is a preview of what’s to come from Treadwell next season as Speedster Powerboats is currently building a 30-foot single-engine V-bottom that Treadwell plans to campaign in either the Super Vee Xtreme or Pro Stock V class. It’s also going to provide MacNamara and company the chance to give demo rides in the pleasure boat, which the team will race with rear seats and all, on the off days.

“We haven’t really told a lot of people we’re coming to Key West yet, but we’re ready to go and excited to get out there and show off the boat’s capabilities,” said MacNamara, the man behind some of the coolest resto-mod projects involving classic Cigarette, Fountains and Scarabs, including the one-of-a-kind Gentry Turbo Eagle. “We put the boat back on the trailer yesterday after going through everything and updating the lights and bearings. We usually just take the boat on the trailer from Costa Mesa to Dana Point and back, not from California to Key West. I think we have the boat sold actually so we shouldn’t have to bring it home.

“Key West and I haven’t gotten along very well over the years, but this time I’m going to go beat it—it’s my year to kick its ass,” MacNamara added with a laugh. “I hadn’t planned to race but when Eric decided to build the new boat he said ‘Why don’t we kick it off this year and run the prototype?’ So we decided to run Class 4, which is the 85-mph class. The prototype runs faster than 100 mph so we’ll need to really watch our speed. The good news is the boat cruises at 80 mph in the Pacific Ocean when we run out of Dana Point to Catalina Island or up the coast to Long Beach. The best part about the Speedster is that it is very well balanced with the twin-engine staggered setup.”

MacNamara said that the team is going to be updating its Facebook page regularly throughout the races so friends and fans can follow along there.
