Team Woody Racing Adds Third Boat To Its Stable

There’s a lot of excitement in the Team Woody Offshore Racing camp as teammates Billy Shipley and Chad Woody announced they have purchased a third boat, which the Texas-based team is going to race in the upcoming Offshore Powerboat Association World Championships in Englewood Beach, Fla., at the end of this month (Nov. 21-24).

According to Shipley, the team, which has gained popularity the last several years racing its 28-foot LaveyCraft in Class 4, purchased the 30-foot Phantom Class 5 raceboat from fellow offshore racer Billy Allen of the Team Allen Lawn Care and Landscaping team, and plans to race the boat along with the team’s Class 3 35-foot Fountain Powerboats V-bottom that it picked up in early August before the Great Lakes Grand Prix in Michigan City, Ind.

“We’re looking forward to running the new boats in Englewood Beach,” Shipley said. “Chad has been eyeing the Team Allen Phantom for some time so he talked to me about getting it and I was all in. Every decision we make is a team decision. The reason we got it is because it’s a turnkey raceboat and the competition in Class 5 has been incredible this year.

“We had a lot of fun racing the Fountain in the last race—that boat is a beast,” he added. “Our competitors better watch out in Englewood.”

Shipley said that he and Woody are going to race the Fountain in Englewood and that their good friend Jeff Muehlhausen of Speed Shop Marine, who has been a huge help to the team over the years, is going to drive the Phantom. Shipley is keeping the throttleman for the boat a secret for now.

Shipley also credited Brian Jackson of Offshore Outdrives for rebuilding both of the team’s drives on the Fountain—one after Michigan City and the other after the Roar Offshore season finale of the APBA Offshore Championship Series in Fort Myers Beach, Fla.

“Brian does great work and he’s fast, too,” Shipley said. “It’s the first time we’ve worked with him and it definitely won’t be the last.”

With an engine issue sidelining the LaveyCraft for Englewood Beach, Team Woody is focusing on the two boats for the world championships. But the teammates aren’t ruling out campaigning all three boats next season, especially after finishing second to the undefeated Simmons Marine team in the Class 4 standings.

“We’re working on sponsorships for next season already—it’s going to be a fun season,” Shipley said. “This year has been incredible. We’ve seen more boats at every event than we’ve seen over the last five years.”
