Texas Outlaw Challenge Ready for Amazing Year

Although the event has surpassed expectations and managed to build upon the previous year’s success for the past six years, Paul Robinson, who has led the organizational efforts of the Texas Outlaw Challenge since the beginning, is anticipating that the seventh annual boating waterfront party in Texas will be the best one yet.

Showcasing the local communities of Kemah, Seabrook and Clear Lake, not to mention North Galveston Bay, last year’s Texas Outlaw Challenge featured 165 performance boats and Robinson wouldn’t be surprised if 200 boats show up for this year’s four-day event (June 19-22).

Starting with the Stampede Street Party and event registration on Thursday evening, this year the streets in Kemah’s Lighthouse district will be shut down to accommodate more amazing boat displays as well as sponsor booths, restaurants and others merchants.

On Friday morning the fun continues with the GPS Outlaw Shootout (last year Kenny Mungle won with a 171-mph pass in his 32-foot Skater Powerboats catamaran Gone Again) followed by the premier poker run stop—a Texas-sized pool party at the home of event sponsor Kenny Armstrong of DeHumidification Technologies from noon until 4 p.m. An added bonus of the Shootout is that all registered boats will get an event GPS unit to record the boat’s top speed at any point during Saturday’s poker run. Six-shooter replica gun trophies are awarded in 20 classes, with the fastest entry receiving the Big Gun Shootout award.

Saturday starts off with a mandatory captain’s safety meeting and then moves on to generous hospitality from the poker run stops, including HarborWalk (for swimming and lunch), Topwater Grill, Blue Marlin Fuel Docks, Turtle Club, Cabo Club, Endeavour Marina/Sam’s Boat and new additions—Bay Bridge Marina and Galveston Yacht Basin. During the poker run, the Kemah Marina Channel will host the Steel Horse Stampede custom bike show.

After hitting the stops, participants will enjoy the Outlaw High Roller Game and a new format for Saturday’s dinner that will allow them to choose a restaurant at the Kemah Boardwalk Saloons and make a reservation to enjoy dinner at their leisure before heading to the poker run party at 10 p.m.

A few high-profile boats expected to attend include Phantom—Armstrong’s 48-foot Marine Technology Inc. (MTI) catamaran—Don Lightfoot’s 52-foot cat from Nor-Tech Hi-Performance Boats and Gino Gargiulo’s Lamborghini-themed 48 MTI (read the story).
