Twisted Metal Snags Big-Time Sponsor For Key West Worlds

For throttleman/owner Billy Glueck and driver Brett Lee Furshman, the Twisted Metal Motorsports graphics on their 40-foot Fountain raceboat that competes in Super Boat International‘s Extreme class has been a nod to Glueck’s scrap metal and auto parts business in Osprey, Fla., rather than any outside supporting sponsor. But with new sponsorship from worldwide automotive parts and systems giant Cooper Standard for the SBI World Championships in Key West, Fla., next week that’s changed—as will the graphics on the red V-bottom before it heads to Key West.

“It’s really cool,” said Glueck. “Corey Shantry, who used to own the Extreme Liquid Assets raceboat, basically made it happen.”

Several years ago, the Twisted Metal boat ran as Miccosukee Gaming—its title sponsor at the time. However, Cooper Standard is the team’s first sponsor with a worldwide business. According to Glueck, the company is considering developing parts for marine use, which is the primary reason its decision-makers chose to sponsor an offshore racing team.

Glueck said that he Furshman hope to deliver a performance—and more—that will entice Cooper Standard to continues its sponsorship of the team beyond the 2015 Key West Worlds.

“We are hoping they want to sponsor us next year so we’re they’re on the hullsides of the boat, on our shirts and everywhere we can think of,” said Glueck.

At present, three boats—Hooters/Instigator, Outerlimits and Airway Aerospace—in addition to Twisted Metal/Cooper Standard—are registered in the Extreme class for next week’s races. That, too, has the veteran offshore racer particularly excited for the 2015 SBI Worlds.

“It’s going to be the same kind of tight, competitive deal they have in the Superboat catamaran class,” Glueck said. “If you miss a prop selection or make mistake on the course—if you even cough—you’re going to be behind.”
