Visit Key West Facebook Page: Focused, Useful—And Fun

Looking for a strong resource of information focused on Key West, Fla., which—arguably of course—is the most popular destination in the high-performance powerboating world? Check out the Visit Key West Facebook page, Key West locals Captain Steve Lamp, a renowned Mercury Marine-backed fishing guide who operates Dream Catchers Fishing Charters, and his wife, Gennifer, launched the public Facebook group-page just three months ago.

Curated by locals, Visit Key West delivers useful and entertaining information. Photos by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix/speedonthewater.com.

With the Florida Keys having opened to nonresidents just four days ago after a two-plus-month, COVID-19-induced shutdown, Visit Key West is a great source of information on everything from finding the best Key Lime pie to accessing Dry Tortugas National Park

Like most public Facebook groups, Visit Key West aggregates much of its content from other professional media sources (the Miami Herald, the Key West Citizen, the Monroe County tourism website, Keywester.com and more) in addition to producing some original material. Unlike most public Facebook groups in the go-fast boating world, it’s not a compilation of ubiquitous, mind-numbing launch-ramp-and-docking blooper videos.

Instead, Visit Key West is filled with useful content curated by Key West locals. The Lamps are admins for the page and they know their town.

Of course, Visit Key West diligently promotes locals businesses. But the tone of those promotions hospitable rather than self-serving.

Few if any go-fast boating destinations attract more impressive hardware than Key West.

Best of all, or at least close to it, the page has three basic and well-enforced rules that lift it out of the standard Facebook dreck. And for most folks, they’re not hard to follow. They are:

Be Kind, Courteous and Fun
We’re all in this together to create a welcoming environment. Treat everyone with respect. There will be no bashing of anyone or thing. Businesses please respond and promote yourselves without bashing other businesses.

Keep It Light and Friendly Everyone Is Welcome
We are all here to enjoy the topic of Key West. Whether you are a visitor past, present or frequent flyer, a vendor, attraction or just a person who loves to think about the laid back lifestyle of our incredible little island city.. Keep it light.

This Is All About Key West
Let’s keep it that way. Non-Key-West-related posts will be dragged out into the harbor and left with the tide.
