World Champions Crowned at 2015 Key West Worlds

After a week of testing, racing and hanging out with their fans, the offshore race teams at the Super Boat International Offshore World Championships in Key West, Fla., are most definitely ready to get home. And as usual some of the luckiest teams will be leaving with a little extra hardware.

The Hooters/Instigator team of Peter Meyer and John Stanch took home the Superboat Extreme class world title in Meyer’s Fountain.

“This is my 12th world championship and it’s still special,” said Peter Meyer, owner/throttleman of the Hooters/Instigator Fountain that claimed the Superboat Extreme class championship after winning Wednesday and Friday and finishing second on the final day of racing on Sunday. “It was a great week and we set ourselves up to where we didn’t need to get into any serious competition on the last day; we just needed to finish second and be smart about it. We thought it was going to be rougher than it was on Sunday so I wish we would have went with a smaller set of props, but it worked out in the end. Billy (Glueck) and Brett (Lee Furshman) are always great competitors. We just had a gameplan and we executed it to win the championship.”

When asked what, if anything, was different about this year’s championship, Meyer responded without hestitation.

“I’m so glad to have my friend Joe Sgro out here racing with us again,” Meyer said, referring to Sgro, who competed alongside Steve Curtis in the Outerlimits V-bottom in the same class as Meyer and finished third overall. “We all have such a good time racing against each other, and I think it showed this week. We’re just happy we were able to take the top spot after a long week of racing.”

According to Randy Scism, the throttleman of the CMS 3 52-foot MTI that earned the Superboat Unlimited class world championship alongside owner/driver Bob Bull after finishing first on Wednesday and Friday and second on Sunday, the Superboat Unlimited class was pretty competitive in Key West this year.

“Today was perfect—it doesn’t get any better than this,” said Scism, who owns MTI in Wentzville, Mo. “We got a great start and we came around the corner in a pretty good position. Miss GEICO was running real strong and Johnny (Tomlinson) and Jeff (Harris) were running real strong (in CMS 03, the team’s other MTI), so it was a great battle.

“Bob held up great out there—he did a great job,” he added. “I think our prop selection was right on today and we had good acceleration and plenty of top-end thanks to the correct setup. Jeff and Johnny did awesome, there was no need to chase those guys. If they got first and we got second, that put us first and second in the championship and that’s the best we could hope for. It was nice to have them out front.”

Scism said the world championship was the perfect end to a triple crown feat that included the SBI National Championships and World Championships along with last week’s MTI world championship by the Abu Dhabi Team in the Union Internationale Motonautique Class 1 circuit (read the story).

In the other classes, the always competitive WHM Motorsports team of Billy Mauff and Jay Muller managed to claim the championship after finishing second, first and third in the three races. The evenly matched class featured nine boats in the start of Sunday’s final race, and managed to have a different team win on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. In the overall standings, Cleveland Construction finished second and Team AMSOIL rounded out the podium in third. Unfortunately for the father-and-son team in the HP Mafia Skater, the day ended early when they barrel-rolled their 38-foot Skater after exiting turn one. Fortunately neither of them were seriously injured.

After finishing first, second and second in the week’s three races, Kyler Talbot and Jay Muller claimed the Superboat Stock class championships ahead of Patriot Vapor and BBR Blakes Brothers Racing, while the winner of the Superboat Vee class world championship went to Sun Print’s Steve Miklos and Jason McGonnel who finished second, second and first in the three days or racing.

In the Manufacturers classes, the Crazy Chicken team of Dee Early and Anthony Silveira edged out Two Cruel to win the Manufacturer 4 class title after taking first in all three races, and the 2nd Amendment team of Neil Wobbe and Karl Steger walked away with the world title after claiming first, second and first to finish 135 points ahead of The Developer team of Scott Brown and Eddie Tamberino.

“We’re extremely happy with the championship especially for our team owner Joe Vaughan and his wife, Terri,” Wobbe said after Sunday’s race. “Joe took over the team a couple of years ago and we’ve been working our way toward a championship ever since. This is my fifth world championship in the Spectre catamaran (formerly Zipp Express), but our first as 2nd Amendment. It was definitely special for all of us, but it was particularly special for Karl as he got married at sunset on Saturday to his beautiful bride, Dee, and won a world championship on Sunday.”
