Big-Power Mercury Marine And Ilmor Marine Engines Earn Innovation Awards

If this year’s Innovation Awards at the Miami International Boat Show had a recurring them in the engine category, it was relatively massive power. For Fond du Lac, Wis.-based Mercury Marine, that meant taking top honors in the outboard segment with its 600-hp Verado engine, the world’s first V-12 outboard engine that—among other attributes—features an automatic transmission with a steerable lower-unit and counter-rotating propellers.

The 7.6-liter engines are on the transoms of models from Formula and other builders at the in-water Sea Isle Marina and Yachting Center display, as well as inside the show’s Miami Beach Convention Center venue.

Sponsored by the National Marine Manufacturers Association, the awards are selected by a panel of judges from Boating Writers International across an expansive range of categories. Veteran marine journalists Alan Jones and Lenny Rudow were decidedly impressed with Mercury Marine’s latest—and largest—outboard product.

“It’s changed the way boat builders design their boats,” they said in an NMMA press release. “It’s so full of innovation we can’t even list it all.”

Exclusive to MasterCraft towboats, the Ilmor Marine Supercharged 6.2L took top honors in the Inboard engine category. The direct fuel-injection, closed-cooling mill is the most powerful engine ever offered in a towboat and will go into production this spring for delivery in 2023.

Ilmor’s new supercharged creation is the world’s most powerful towboat engine.

The Miami International Boat Show closes tomorrow.
