Breakfast—And More—With The Outerlimits Crew

A week ago Friday, I was about 10 minutes late for a scheduled 7 a.m. departure from Camden on the Lake Resort. Heading into the 31st annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Central Missouri, I wasn’t expecting to see the sunrise on back-to-back days at the lake, but the opportunity to get a ride in the one-and-only Kahuna—a canopied Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats SV 43 model owned by Michigan performance boaters John and Julie Tokar—was too good to pass up the day after the Center Console Roundup that had our Speedonthewater.com meeting up at Camden on the Lake and Shady Gators at the same time Thursday.

Luckily for me—and my friend Tyler Kaddatz of TK Kustoms who was along for the ride—the Tokars didn’t seem too annoyed we were late. A month ago, I wrote about the 43-foot Outerlimits that was recently repowered with twin Mercury Racing 1350/1100 engines by the team at Performance Boat Center in Osage Beach, Mo., I was excited to see how well the boat responded to the new power plants.

After running close to 10 miles up the lake to Bagnell Dam with the incomparable Michael “Doc” Janssen driving his bright yellow canopied Outerlimits SV 53 on our left for most of the time, we tied Kahuna up at Beavers At The Dam, which opened early for the Outerlimits fleet thanks a phone call from Janssen, who has a second home on the lake and hosts an annual Friday afternoon pool party at his incredible property on mile marker 12.

Following the delicious breakfast, the 15-boat fleet left mile marker zero and blasted to Big Dick’s Halfway Inn at mile marker 47. All I can say is wow. Running in Kahuna with radical Outerlimits catamarans such Jeremy Tschida’s Topless and Burton and Yvette Kirsten’s Jet (right, click to enlarge) running next to us was an experience I will never forget.

The entire day was amazing actually, as I spent some time with Dave and Nicole Weschler, the Pennsylvania owners of a sweet 52-foot Outerlimits V-bottom, and got to meet Jeff Henry of Nebraska, who took delivery of his new SL 50 V-bottom a couple of weeks before the Shootout during the Outerlimits Factory Fun Run. I also got an extra close look at the amazing Crypto, the newest canopied 43-footer from the Bristol, R.I., boat builder.

Thanks to gatherings at Janssen’s place on Lake of the Ozarks and at his resort in Wyoming (Saratoga Hot Springs Resort), I’ve had the chance to get to know a good amount of Outerlimits owners and they’ve been super respectful and amusing. From the Tokars and the Kirstens to New York’s Rich Szesnat and Minnesota’s Adam Seraphine, the Outerlimits crew is a loyal, welcoming group of people who are always for a fun time—on or off the water. There’s no doubt I’ll be joining them again next year at Lake of the Ozarks.
