Gallery Of The Week: Picture-Perfect Formula 500 SSC With New Mercury Verado 600 Engines

As you most likely know, Mercury Marine released its Verado 600, a V-12 beast-of-an outboard, two weeks ago. Designed to move hefty loads—such as the impressive new Formula Boats 500 Super Sport Crossover pictured on Lake X, Mercury Marine’s formerly top-secret test facility in Osceola County, Fla.—the V-12 outboard engine platform is a truly innovative creation.

The past meets the future as Mercury Marine’s longstanding test facility—Lake X—welcomed the new Formula Boats 500 Super Sport Crossover powered by four all-new 600-hp Mercury V-12 engines. Photos courtesy Formula Boats

You can look at the details reported in the speedonthewater.com story and see for yourself. You can also ask the team at Formula in Decatur, Ind., that was delighted to be one of the partners selected by the Fond du Lac, Wis.-based engine manufacturer to showcase the new naturally aspirated engines.

“Formula is proud to be an introductory partner with Mercury for its new 7.6-liter V-12 600-hp Verado outboard engine,” said Scott Smith, the company’s longtime marketing manager. “This is a wild package, with a steerable lower gearcase and a two-speed transmission, a product that is the result of a clean-slate, ground-up design. Mercury chose Formula as one of its partners to introduce the 600s, and installed four of them on our prototype 500 SSC boat.

“Our marketing department ventured down to Florida in early February to experience the boat and get some photography and video,” he continued. “Let me tell you, this power package is strong, and smooth, and quiet, and unique—well, you get the idea. We’re excited about the future with the new Mercury motors.”

Mercury brought several models to its product unveiling for the media, most notably, at least for speedonthewater.com readers, was the 50-foot Formula, which weighs a little more than 23 tons—or 47,000 pounds. According to a performance report from the company, the quad 600 Verado-powered 500 SSC reached 69 mph with its engines turning a maximum operating speed of 6,400 rpm. From a standing start, the boat reached 20 mph in 7.87 seconds and 30 mph in 12.8 seconds.

Based on the feedback thus far, the Mercury Verado 600 is off to a great start. Surely this won’t be the last time the 600-hp monster makes the rounds at Lake X.
