Gallery Of The Week: Skaterfest Sunday Fun Day
A massive awning attached to a trailer owned Massachusetts-based McLaren automobile dealer and Skater Powerboats aficionado Danny DeSantis, the big top came down on Skaterfest in the Detroit Metro area after last Saturday night’s farewell dinner. Speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden rallied a few Skater catamaran owners and their guests to help DeSantis’ two-man crew take down the awning. It’s a big, heavy job and the extra hands did not go unappreciated.

But while that signaled the end of the end of the event for most participants, a few diehards hung around for Sunday’s traditional outing to Brownie’s restaurant for lunch in St. Clair shores followed by a fly-by photo shoot.
Boden captured the action from a Baia cruiser owned by Chip Miller. The owner of Miller Marina, he’s been one of the driving forces behind Skaterfest since Ron Szolack, his best friend for the past 20 years, started it.
On Saturday, Boden shot from the air via helicopter. Yesterday’s water-level shoot offered him a different but still-engaging perspective.
“It is always fun to shoot them from any vantage point and the blue water is part of what makes Michigan summers so awesome,” he said. “I’m sort of partial. I grew up here.”

A handful of Skaterfest participants including first-timers Lindsey and Tyler Miller, Joanie and Mark DiMichele, Don Doty, Rob Turner, Jon Parks, Pete Bogino and J.P. Frolich and their guests ran their cats for what could be—unless Szolack changes his mind—the final photo shoot in Skaterfest history.
It was a bittersweet afternoon.
Kansas-based Skaterfest newbies Lindsey and Tyler Miller stayed put in Michigan yesterday and ran their new 36-foot catamaran powered by Mercury Racing 450R outboard engines in the event’s informal finale.
“Skaterfest is like a family reunion,” said Boden. “There’s nothing like it.”
