Image Of Week: Meanwhile, Back In Miami

When the curtain falls on the traveling show that defines the annual Florida Powerboat Club Key West Poker Run, the players head home—some from as far away the West Coast, some farther still. Such is the case of Dan Ellis, who lives in Valencia, Calif., and purchased a 2010 Cigarette Racing Team 42X Lip-Ship Edition sportboat earlier this year.

But before Ellis departed the Sunshine State for the Golden State with his crew, he paused for one more look at the famed Miami skyline. As anyone who’s ever seen it from the water can attest, there’s nothing quite like it.

Ellis will be back, of course—he didn’t buy the immaculate 42-footer to let it sit any longer than it has to. And it’s safe to say he’s proud of his new ride, which proved itself during last week’s poker run.

“My favorite part of the Key West poker run?” he said. “The fact that we made it there and back in an untried boat.”

Ellis paused to laugh.

“There’s nothing like running through the mangroves, but I would have to say my real ‘favorite part’ of the run was on the way back from the Saturday raft-up,” he said. “As we were pulling into Garrison Blight Marina a sailboat hit one of the power lines and broke it. A live power line fell into the water, so we couldn’t get into the marina. We tied up to a dock then other people tied up to us.

“We were there for around an hour,” he continued. “The raft-up got bigger and then the music started and dancing started. We had our own party going on and met some new people. It really was fun.”
