Image Of The Week: Looking Through A Fountain Tunnel
Of all the angles professional photographers use to capture high-performance catamarans in motion, the through-the-tunnel perspective is the most dramatic. A head-on view of a fast-moving cat is hard to beat when it comes to creating the sensation of speed on the water for the viewer. And when the photographer gets it right, the cat’s sponsons and transom frame the water immediately behind them.

Mark Spencer, Fountain Powerboats’ public and media relations man, definitely got it right with this shot of the Washington, N.C. company’s new 34 Thunder Cat piloted by Billy Moore. A former Powerboat magazine editor, Spencer has seen and captured a photo or two—he majored in photography in college and then applied his craft to the go-fast boating world for decades. He knows what he’s doing and it shows in his work.
Speedonthewater.com co-publisher and executive editor Jason Johnson and I spent a few days at Fountain a couple of weeks ago checking out new models including the Christmas-red 34-footer powered by Mercury Racing 450R outboard engines.
