Inside SOTW Mag: Doc Janssen’s Ever-Expanding Extensive Family

For those of you who don’t know who Dr. Michael “Doc” Janssen is, here’s a little overview. The Denver, Colo.-based spinal surgeon is a longtime performance boat enthusiast who has owned many boats from the likes of Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats, Fountain Powerboats and more, earned multiple offshore racing world titles and been inducted into the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Bob Morgan Memorial Hall of Fame for his on-and off-water contributions to the popular Central Missouri event.

Between the snowmobile events he hosts at his hot springs resort in Saratoga, Wyo., and his home away from home on Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks, former offshore racer Dr. Michael Janssen’s family of boating friends continues to multiply. Photo by Lindsey Miller.

The renowned physician, who specializes in spine care and resolutions, also is one of the most generous people in an industry filled with big-hearted powerboaters. Not only does the father of two gifted children—Matt and Maddie, who have followed in their dad’s footsteps by finishing medical school—give back at events he attends across the country in Watch Your Back, his Outerlimits SV 53 V-bottom powered by twin Mercury Racing 1550/1350 engines, but each year he opens the doors to his Lake of the Ozarks home for his Scenic Circle Power Party during the popular Shootout and he invites his closest friends (and their friends) to Saratoga, Wyo., each January to take part in the Powerboaters Snowmobile Rally at the Saratoga Hot Springs Resort he owns.

And because of that, his extended family of boaters is vast—and ever-increasing.

Ask New York-based veteran offshore racer Billy Mauff, who has taken to visiting with Doc at both locations over the past several years. Mauff has enjoyed his trips to the Saratoga Hot Springs Resort so much that he bought several snowmobiles to keep at the resort so he can fly his plane into Saratoga and snowmobile throughout the winter. Along the way, he even stops to pick up friends, such as Minnesota’s Adam Seraphine, an Outerlimits owner who met Mauff at the snowmobile rally a few years back.

“Doc goes out of his way to make sure everyone has a good time no matter where he is,” said Mauff, who owns and drives the WHM Motorsports Skater Powerboats catamaran. “They don’t make people like Doc anymore. He’s a great guy and the whole snowmobile rally is a sensational event.”
