Jersey Mike’s Subs To Sponsor OPA Point Pleasant Race, Ocean City Dates Shifted

In a move that could not be more perfect given the New Jersey roots of the Offshore Powerboat Association, Jersey Mike’s Subs—a national sandwich chain phenomenon—has stepped up to sponsor the OPA Point Pleasant Grand Prix, which is scheduled for July 13 in the Garden State. The news was announced in a press release from the organization this morning.

“We’re honored to have them as we share a long history stemming from the Jersey Shore,” stated Nick Smith, the vice-president of the Offshore Powerboat Association and the youngest son of Ed “Smitty” Smith, the outfit’s president, in the release. “In 1959, the original Jersey Mike’s Subs was opened in Point Pleasant Beach. Before long, powerboat racing would take its hold on the area as well.

“For the last few years, the Point Pleasant Grand Prix was run early in the season, where some of the sights and smells of the event were missing,” he continued. “We are extremely happy to have it back in a prime slot on June 13.”

Also announced the release, the dates for the Ocean City Grand Prix in Maryland have been pushed back. Originally set for April 30-May 2, the event has been rescheduled for September 24-26.

“Due to restrictions brought on by COVID-19, most of the event attractions and amenities are closed to the public,” Smith stated. “We felt to do justice to the site, competitors and fans it would be better to run the event later in the year, where we hope to put on a top-notch event.

“Phil Houck and his team, Bull On The Beach, at Ocean City have worked tirelessly to provide an outstanding event,” he continued. “There’s no reason to expect that won’t be the case in September.”
