Key West Debut Planned For Sixteen Power-Equipped MTI Cat

If current plans hold, fans strolling the dry pits of the American Power Boat Association/Union Internationale Motonautique Offshore World Championships in Key West, Fla., early next month will get the first public look at a 42-foot MTI catamaran powered by the first installed pair of naturally aspirated, 1,100-hp engines from Detroit-based Sixteen Power. The boat, which is owned by Jeff Stevenson of the former JBS Racing team and is the test-bed for the V-16 engines its developers also plan to offer in supercharged form, will be hauled to Key West next week.

Coming to Key West next month, this 42-foot MTI is equipped with twin V-16 engines from Sixteen Power.

“There’s no better time and place to meet poker runners, racers, boat builders and race organizers than during Key West Worlds,” said Tom Robinson of Sixteen Power. “Since we didn’t make it to the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in August, this will be our official debut. Race World Offshore has graciously allowed us to exhibit in the dry pits, and we’ll be entertaining visitors to our exhibit tent and taking interested parties for sea trials.”

The 42-footer won’t be in the Key West competition mix, though Robinson said they initially registered it in the Unlimited class before learning that the 2006 model-year catamaran’s canopy doesn’t comply with current standards. But Robinson hinted at a possible future foray in offshore racing.

“Will JBS Racing be back next year?” he said. “During the week we will be discussing eligibility for Class 1 with Azam Rangoonwala of Powerboat P1.”
