Keys Island Runners Heading Back To Islamorada For A Great Cause

The Keys Island Runners group has a July 9-10 happening on tap—dubbed the KIR Autism Awareness Fun Run—for powerboat owners in the Florida Keys. The course will take participants from the Buttonwood Sound Basin in Key Largo to the Tiki Sandbar off Islamorada.

It is the first time the group, which is led by Daniel Garcia, III and has almost 30,000 Instagram followers, has tapped the nonprofit Autism Society of the Keys organization as an event beneficiary.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available.

“There’s no entry fee,” said Garcia, who founded the group in 2018 .”The money I collect from sponsors is what goes toward the donation to the charity we choose. This will be our first time donating to this foundation.

“Everyone is welcome to come,” he added “I can never say exactly how many boats will show up because I don’t charge an entry fee and don’t do registrations. But if the weather is good I’m sure it will be a lot.”

A meet-and-greet party at Gilbert’s Resort and Tiki Bar in Key Largo is set for Friday, July 9, from the 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will be followed by a sunset raft-up. The run will begin the following day at noon.
